It can be hard for therapists to maintain a systemic, relational approach when the couple presents with unbalanced contributions to the problems.  The individuals may even agree one has “more responsibility.” But in The Doherty Approach, both are participating in negative interactions, even if not equally, and thus both have real work to do on themselves in the couples therapy.  Our motto is “meaningful contributions” to the problems (even if not equivalent) and “meaningful personal agendas” to work on for changing the relationship.
